There was plenty of excitement at Mayfair Lakes on Thursday. The Gold team decided to contribute to buy TERRY a personal Garmin GPS that is automatically updated with Birdiehunters' game venues. At 7:29, when everyone was already on their way to their respective assigned start tees, I got a frantic call, "Are we not playing Riverway today?"
DAVID had to play one against two on #8 for the GOLDs. Good thing, JOE/DON of the BLUEs were sporting enough to waive "disqualification" options and allowed TERRY to join the match on #9. (Hell, who would dare tell the Ryder Cup Tournament Official - DAVID - to lose the match by disqualification anyways?) It was a rough start by TERRY dunking a few balls on the 9th. However, the duo recovered to overcome the JOE/DON duet 7 - 4.
When I got the announcement of the results, I was wondering about the KEVIN/JACK team of the GOLDs. JACK who? Nicklaus? Nicolson? and JILL? Mr. Fernandez, did you adapt a new moniker for the tournament? Anyways, KEVIN and JACK - whoever that guy is - trounced the 1st game heroes, MILES/CHANGL, 10-6. It appears that Mr. Lim's magic faded away. Or is it the strong play of KEVIN?
The former MASTER'S CHAMP (2014) was humbled!
TWO FOR THE GOLDS!
A wet suit could have save RORY. Or floating balls. Two of the longest drivers of the club teamed up for this 2nd leg - RORY/JOHNL. Drove the ball like gorillas; putted like gorillas? RORY's complaint? "Too many water hazards on the course". A 93/103 score explains how this BLUE team imploded against MARIO and CHRIS. It is the worst routing of the BLUEs by the unlikely GOLDs' duo - 13-4. Don't blink. That is not a typo. Later, RORY was found at a nearby pond.
THREE UP FOR THE GOLDS!
The strategy of keeping the DANNY/RICHARD team for two games may have back fired against the BLUES. It did not help that Mr. 79 showed up for game two. VINCENT's game was near flawless, recording no worst than bogie on any hole resulting in net birdies and pars all over the place. His partner HAN, made a natural birdie on 14th, one of the toughest and longest holes on the course, for a net eagle. Meanwhile, a quadruple bogie by DANNY on one of the par 3's could have contributed to self immolation by the DANNY/RICHARD team, surrendering to a thrashing 9-6.
FOUR UP FOR THE GLODS!
Perhaps the most intense competition was between CHANGHJ/SUNNY against MITCH/BILL. How else could anyone explain a 4:45 round? Where is the RYDER CUP OFFICIAL? Were they playing for $1000 a hole? Could the BLUEs claim match disqualification for slow play? Game over after a"very long game" - 9-5.
FIVE UP FOR THE GOLDS!
STEPHEN could not contain his glee at the parking lot as he exclaimed that he and his GOLD partner SIMON were down 4 points with 4 holes to go against BRAD and ED (Masters champ 2015). The details are a little fuzzy now but it seems that an OB by ED started the come back. Then there was a nervous putt-putt-putt (you can think what you wish) that rattled the BLUES team. They HALVED the entire match on those last four holes.
GOLD still up by FIVE!
The lone hero of the BLUES was LAWRENCE. Claiming an index of 26, he almost single handedly maimed the GOLDs' team of ERNIE/RIC. He was chipping and putting for pars (net birdies) all over the place! On the 10th which shared greens with the hole, his approach was "pin high" on the 13th - nearly over 100 feet from the 10th pin with uphill-downhill snake-breaks. I could hardly see him as I was holding the flag and he called me on his cell phone and said, "I don't need the flag." His laser-guided putt which took forever to travel the incredible distance settled within tap-in for par! BENEDICT, his partner, was off his game perhaps because LAWRENCE spilled coffee on his shoes as they were rushing to tee off. BLUES took it 6-4.
GOLDs lead 8.5 to 4.5
Celebrating their win, the GOLDs and some "brave" members of the BLUEs, took to a Pinoy restaurant for lunch after the game. The boasting and kibitzing pummelled members of the BLUES. But when the food was served, hunger prevailed over humiliation. The BLUEs are promising revenge on the singles matches at KINGS LINKS next Thursday.

GREAT DEAL AT KINGS LINKS
Although they are charging $49 + tax for others who are playing this Thursday at a SHOTGUN start, your soon-to-retire EL KAPITAN was able to secure a $45 "all-in" green fee for the BIRDIEHUNTERs CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH FINALs. Don't miss it!
