On paper, they had the big guns. Yesterday at RIVERWAY, those guns were blazing!
Here are the 2015 BIRDIEHUNTERS RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONS:
From left to right: BUDI, ED, CAPTAIN DANNY, JOE, HARRY, RORY, COONEY. Missing: VINCENT, JOHN, CHANG L, MILES, JIN, BILL.
In the SINGLES match, the rout started as MILES (10.6) took CHANG HJ (8.7) to the cleaners - BLUES 1-up. In the same foursome, BUDI (20.9), in his summer vacation here from Indonesia, claims the 2nd BLUES match against CHANG HJ (8.7). Two matches, 2-up for the BLUES. Some ray of sunshine for the GOLDS came from the next foursome when CHRIS (26.5) shoved COONEY (21.4) aside with 3 up and 2 holes to go, taking back a point from the BLUES. SUNNY (25.5) held tough to halve his match against JOE (10.8) who blazed the course with an even par 36 in the front nine. BLUES - 2.5; GOLDS 1.5.
The most interesting matches of the day are with the third BLIND pairings when the two team CAPTAINS drew their names. CAPTAIN DANNY (11.5), looking like The Incredible Hulk, is matched against svelte senior EL KAPITAN (ERNIE) (17.9). At a critical point of the match on the 16th hole, EL KAPITAN's drive was way right and he could not find his ball. With a stroke and distance penalty, he decided to go back to the tee. With his next shot deposited on the green, he is putting for a bogie hoping to halve the hole. The two-putt, however was for a double-bogie 6. Danny turns and asked, "Is that for a 7?", to which the response was "No". Then, he said, "You win!" (It turns out that he also had a 6 on the hole.)
That ties the match with 2 holes to go. It comes down to the 18th. EL KAPITAN chunks his drive short; makes up for it with a long fairway wood and a pitching wedge pin high 12-footer. Captain DANNY pushed his approach right of the green in the rough and chilly-dipped his chip shot way short. EL KAPITAN wins the match putting the GOLDS even with the BLUES 2.5/2.5.
DAVID COULD NOT SLAY GOLIATH
The penultimate end of the match came when KING KONG GOLIATH-HARRY (20.7) murdered CAPTAIN DAVID (9.2). In spite of 2 out of 4 attempts at eagles on the par 5's, DAVID had his worst putting day, unable to get birdies. The end came when he double bogied the 14th par 4 after a massive drive with a sand wedge to go. Meanwhile, if he was not matching pars to take a point on stroke holes, KING KONG was scrambling for ties. He nails the coffin when he made par on the 16th (followed by another par and a 2-putt birdie on the 18th). BLUES - 1 UP.
Final matches: SIMON (12.2) splits with JIN (22); ERIC (12) ties BILL (30); BERT (13.4) surrenders to ED (15.1); RORY (11.5) trounces HOWARD (11.5).
After the two ties (SIMON/JIN; ERIC/BILL), BLUES led by 1 point (4.5/3.5). ED clinches it for the BLUES with a win against BERT. RORY gave it "icing on the cake".
CELEBRATION AT THE CLUB HOUSE
All who stayed for the luncheon following the tournament enjoyed fabulous treats from Hugh Izumi's kitchen at the RIVERWAY CLUBHOUSE. HANDICAP master SIMON and EL KAPITAN were honoured (thank you very much) for their work for the BIRDIEHUNTERS of BC.
SIDENOTE
Perhaps it is a fitting tribute that in golf, "age is only a number". The GOLIATH of the BLUES, KING KONG, is now officially a senior entitled to green fee discounts and senior amenities as of this month. Next month, he starts collecting OLD AGE PENSION. However, as you can see, he is just as good as "super senior" ED in "now" having opportunities to "shoot his age". The only difference is that ED is NOT a "sandbagger"!
