New TWO-BALL Match Play Format INTRODUCED
The two team Captains agreed to alternately select the match play format for this year's RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY tournament between the GOLD and the BLUE teams. Captain DAVID chose the two-ball total for the 1st leg of the tournament which put the BLUEs at 1-up . Captain DANNY introduced at KINGS LINKs today a "Modified Stableford" match play whereby a two-man team is formed and their TOTAL POINTs earned is matched against the opposing team.
("RED HOT" Gold Team: L/R - CHRIS, BERT, HOWARD, ERNIE, CAPTAIN DAVID, SIMON, SUNNY, HAN, CHANG HJ)
(BLUES: L/R CHANG L, HARRY, ED, JOHN, CAPTAIN DANNY, BILL, JOE, COONEY, VINCENT)
Using full course handicap, each player earns the following points:
[8 points for "net" double eagle; 5 points for "net" eagle; 2 points for "net" birdie; 0 point for par; -1 point for bogie; -3 points for double bogie +]
Because of late withdrawal of players, there were 18 participants which presented the team captains a torturing puzzle. It was also regretful that because of the 2-man match format, BERT & BILL were "drawn" to play together as a 2-some; with their scores matched with another player on the team. (Sorry, BERT/BILL, regardless of the "luck of the draw", we must be vigilant enough not to have a repeat of this situation in the future. It is just not fair.)
As the results have been circulated by email, here are the TEAM MATCH UP and sequence of play:
1) BERT (-7) and ERNIE (-2) = -9; BILL (0) and VINCENT (5) = 5;BLUES 1-up
2) HAN (-3) and CHANG HJ (-4) = -7; JOE (11) and COONEY (-4) = 7; BLUES 2-up
3) CHRIS (15) and SUNNY (7) = 22; ED (-1) and CHANG L (5) = 4; BLUES 1-up
4) HOWARD (2) and SIMON (16) = 18; DANNY (8) and JOHN (5) = 13; BLUES/GOLD All Square
5) DAVID (7) and ERNIE (-2) = 5; HARRY (-1) and VINCENT (5) = 4; GOLD 1-UP
HIGHLIGHTS
The "modified" Stableford format presented some interesting perspectives. A player with over 18 index scoring a natural birdie on the toughest holes could conceivably earn 8 points (double eagle) on those holes. More importantly, someone with an 18 handicap who could shoot bogie golf with 5 pars could score 10 points! Perhaps the two Captains could evaluate the results and determine if this format is equitable for all levels of play, particularly when results are based on TOTAL points for 18 holes rather than on hole-by-hole match play.
Regardless, the result (above) demonstrates how differing opinions could arise (in particular when you see team scoring differentials of over 18 points (match 3) or 14 points (match 2).
What saved the day for the GOLDs is the last team (ERNIE/DAVID). With only one hole to go, the BLUE TEAM (HARRY/VINCENT) was up 4 points. Who would ever think of the "impossible"? Throughout the day, VINCENT and HARRY were chopping the GOLD Team like firewood with natural birdies" for "net eagles"! They collected 15 points for their eagles. The GOLD TEAM never lost faith, however. When HARRY dumped 2 balls in the water and VINCENT followed with another dunking, the BLUES gave away 6 points on the last hole! UNTHINKABLE! - ....but EXCITING. With that, the GOLDs are 1-up for the day.
ALL SQUARE for the final at RIVERWAY.

Everyone is invited to stay after the MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP. Whether you play or not in the tournament, you are welcome to join us.
A side story - when ask if JOHN had a great game, he said, "NAH!!!! I had a 15 on the par 5 in the back; could not get out of bunkers and fescues"! What we want to know, too, is a scope on CHRIS' 15 point game! SIMON shot his BEST GAME OF THE YEAR with a 78! However, his team with HOWARD is 2nd to CHRIS/SUNNY team (22 points)
