Not a sizeable margin but an important opening 1 point advantage for the BLUES. It is a first time in many years for the BLUES to be up in the RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY TOURNAMENT.
Here are the results:
(Left to right: GOLD'S CHRIS, ERNIE, against BLUE's ED, MILES)
Out of the tee box first were the combatants above. In this match up, it is clear to see that the BLUES' twosome would be formidable adversaries. Although ERNIE matched ED's 43 in the front 9, it is a different story with MILES and CHRIS. MILES shot an even par 36 in front. He opened the back nine with three straight birdies to record a 3-under par after 12 holes. His excellent play was ruined by a triple bogie 6 on the first par three in the back, followed by 4 bogies (for a gross 76). Regardless, MILES and ED posted a 1 point up for the BLUES.
(Left to right: GOLD's HAN and HOWARD against BLUE's JOE and MILES)
Because of odd number of players on both teams (7), the two team captains agreed to match their LOWEST SCORING member against the ODD team member. In the BLUE's case, JOE is the odd man. With MILES being the lowest scoring team member for the BLUES, his net score was matched with JOE's. The resulting match up is quite interesting. HAN and HOWARD (last week's joint winners) halved the match against JOE and MILES. BLUE's are up 1.5 points.
(Left to right: GOLD's SIMON, MARIO; BLUE's JOHN and COONEY)
This match-up is an "upset" in the making. Statistically, the JOHN/COONEY tandem is considered to be the underdogs, playing against a strong twosome. However, except for the fact that JOHN tops the HIGH INDEX DIVISION for the day, it is unexplained how SIMON/MARIO surrendered one losing point with 5-up! It would be interesting to hear the story from anyone in that group. BLUES - 2.5 points against GOLD's .5 point.
(Left to right: RORY, DAVID, DANNY)
With Captain DAVID being the "odd" man on the GOLD TEAM, his score was matched up with ERNIE's (as the GOLD's low scoring member and runner-up in the High Index Division for the day). DAVID/ERNIE team is 5-up in this match against Captain DANNY and RORY to earn a point for the GOLD. Again, this is quite a curious result considering that on paper, the GOLD TEAM in this case is clearly underdog. BLUEs - 2.5 points vs. GOLDs 1.5 point.
NEXT GAME - KINGS LINKs @ 8:00
As it is with the Europeans playing against the Americans in the RYDER CUP, there is this unexplainable excitement about team competition. I am sure some team members would have something to say about their day's experience during this first 2-ball match play. With the next game scheduled at a compelling links course, we can't wait to find out what the TEAM CAPTAINS have up their sleeves.
